What’s the difference between a visa and ETIAS?

The ETIAS and the Schengen visa are two travel authorizations for Europe. They differ in the procedures for obtaining them, their periods of validity and their conditions of use. The main differences between a visa and an ETIAS are :

  1. How to obtain : The Schengen visa is issued by the embassy of a European country, while the ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization issued by the European Union;
  2. Validity : Conditions and periods of validity are specific to each type of Schengen visa, ranging from 3 months to 5 years. However, the ETIAS is valid for 3 years.
  3. Application process: The procedure for obtaining a Schengen visa requires a consular interview and the submission of additional documents in the original language. ETIAS, on the other hand, simply requires you to complete an online form and pay the fee directly.

Is an ESTA a Schengen visa?

No, an ETIAS authorization is not a visa. An ETIAS cannot be used as a visa in the Schengen area. The ETIAS does not have the legal and regulatory criteria of a Schengen visa.

Can I travel with an ETIAS if I have a Schengen visa?

No, a person with a valid Schengen visa must travel with that visa within Europe. The stay must correspond to the purpose for which the visa was obtained. Travelers cannot apply online for ETIAS to travel.
