Which travellers require a Schengen transit visa (type A)?
Airport transit visas are compulsory for nationals of certain countries who need to stop over in the international transit zone of an airport within the Schengen area, without entering the territory. This visa is required for travelers arriving from specific countries, including :
- Afghanistan
- Bangladesh
- Democratic Republic of Congo
- Eritrea
- Ethiopia
- Ghana
- Iran
- Iraq
- Nigeria
- Pakistan
- Somalia
- Sri Lanka
However, there are exceptions, notably for holders of visas or residence permits issued by EU/EEA countries, holders of diplomatic passports and certain other special categories.
Which travellers require a Schengen short-stay visa (type C)?
This visa is required for nationals of non-Schengen visa-exempt countries wishing to stay in the Schengen area for a maximum of 90 days within a 180-day period. It is intended for purposes such as :
- Tourism: to visit Schengen countries.
- Business: for meetings, conferences or professional events.
- Short-term studies: participation in short-term seminars or training courses.
- Family or friendly visit: to visit relatives living in the Schengen area.
- Cultural or sporting events: participation in competitions or festivals.
Travelers from countries such as India, China, Russia, and most African and Asian countries must obtain this visa before arriving in Europe.
Which travellers require a Schengen long-stay visa (type D)?
A long-stay visa is required for foreign nationals wishing to stay in a Schengen area country for more than 90 days. It is required for reasons such as :
- Work: employment in a Schengen country.
- Studies: university studies or longer courses.
- Family reunification: joining a family member living in one of the Schengen countries.
- Scientific research: participation in long-term research projects.
- Permanent installation: intention to settle permanently for personal or professional reasons.
The conditions and documents required vary depending on the destination country and the nature of the stay (France, Germany, Spain, etc.).
How do I apply for a Schengen visa?
You must apply for a Schengen visa at the embassy of the country you are visiting in the Schengen area. If the trip includes several countries, the request must be made in the first country visited, or the one where the traveler will spend the most time.
When should I apply for a Schengen visa?
Applications can be made up to 6 months before departure.
What documents do I need to apply?
Here is the list of documents required to obtain a Schengen visa:
- A valid passport with an expiry date of at least 3 months;
- A completed visa application form ;
- A passport photo for the visa;
- Medical insurance covering emergency medical care, hospitalization and repatriation;
