ETIAS VISA EUROPE

Do Ukrainian nationals need an ETIAS to travel in Europe?

For the most part, yes, but with some important exceptions. Ukrainian citizens holding a biometric passport already benefited from visa exemption for stays of less than 90 days within a 180-day period.

From 2026, they will need to obtain an ETIAS authorization to travel in Europe for tourism or business purposes.

However, a derogation applies to Ukrainians enjoying temporary protection in the EU. This status was activated in March 2022 due to the war with Russia. These people have the right to reside, work and access social services without ETIAS. Their status has been extended until 2027.

What is ETIAS for Ukrainians?

The ETIAS is an electronic short-stay travel authorization for citizens of visa-exempt countries, including Ukrainians. From 2026, they will have to complete the ETIAS form online to obtain their mandatory travel authorization.

The ETIAS will be electronically linked to the passport for Europe and valid for 3 years.

Does the war change the ETIAS obligation for Ukrainians?

Yes, Ukrainians who have been granted temporary protection status in one of the member states will benefit from ETIAS-free access. They will be legally resident in Europe, with rights of residence, work, education and healthcare. This status will be valid until at least March 2027, according to the European Commission‘s proposal.

On the other hand, Ukrainians traveling with a simple biometric passport will absolutely have to obtain the ETIAS for short stays, unless there is a future change in European policy.

How do I apply for ETIAS for Ukrainians?

  1. Visit the official ETIAS website;
  2. Fill in the online form;
  3. Pay ETIAS fees;
  4. Receiveauthorization by e-mail;
  5. Travel with a valid biometric passport.

Important: no paper or PDF forms are used, everything is done exclusively online.
