ETIAS Authorization to Travel to Italy

Italy is one of the most popular European destinations in the world. Non-Schengen nationals will soon be required to have an ETIAS authorization to enter the country. The system is expected to launch in 2027.

Can you travel to Italy with an ETIAS authorization?

Yes. For stays of less than 90 days, travelers who are nationals of countries authorized by the ETIAS system will be able to enter Italy with only an ETIAS travel authorization, without having to apply for a Schengen visa. Italy has been a member of the Schengen Area since 1997.

The ETIAS system will apply to all Schengen countries, which means that a single authorization is sufficient if your trip includes Italy and other destinations such as France, Austria, or Greece.

Italy, the Vatican, and San Marino: Vatican City and the Republic of San Marino are independent states surrounded by Italy. They are not part of the Schengen Area but have an open-entry policy for travelers coming from Italy. An ETIAS authorization will therefore allow you to enter these countries indirectly via Italy, without any additional formalities.

How do I obtain an ETIAS authorization for Italy?

The ETIAS authorization application will be completed entirely online. Filling out the ETIAS form will take only a few minutes if the applicant has a valid biometric passport.
